Are Visual Processing Weaknesses the Cause of Dyslexia?

There has been debate about whether visual processing differences between Individuals with dyslexia compared to non-dyslexic individuals, are the cause of this disability.   New research suggests this is not the case!  Come view the attached YouTube video enetitled Visual Processing and Dyslexia to learn more about the new research at George Washington University Medical Center by Guinevere Eden, Ph.D.

Free Closed Syllable Game: Mastering the Short Vowel Sounds

Most kids just adore puppies and I created this fun, free board game to enchant even the most discouraged readers.  Players roll a die, work around the board, and select cards with missing vowels.  If the vowel landed on helps to make a word when used with their card, the player gets a puppy!  The winner is the first player to collect all the puppy cards. My students just love this game and they quickly learn their short vowels. It's also a nice activity to use for the introduction of words with a single closed syllable.

Follow the following link or the image and click on the "free sample game" button.  PUPPY PARTY

Materials for Struggling Readers: Come Get a Free Sample

Many struggling readers suffer from cognitive processing weaknesses that get in the way of the learning process.  These deficits often become barriers that can make the learning process frustrating and unpleasant.

So what Can be Done?
Testing scores from a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation often uncovers these areas of difficulty.  Evaluations can be requested through the public school or you can pursue an outside assessment from a trained professional.   Once you have the report and the areas of difficulty have been defined, helping students to strengthen these deficits is the key to quick remedial results.  So, acting like a personal trainer for the brain, specialists, teachers and even parents can help to get students back on track.

What are the Cognitive Weaknesses that Get in the Way of Reading?
There are numerous cognitive weaknesses that can get in the way of reading.  Here are the most common:
  • Auditory processing
  • Sequencing
  • Visual processing
  • Memory
  • Mental flexibility
  • Attention
  • Attention to detail
  • Visual tracking
  • Spatial skills
  • Directionality
  • Receptive language
What tools are available to strengthen these areas of difficulty?
I have created three publications that offer fun activities that remediate the cognitive processing areas required for basic reading and math.  I offer a free sample of each the publications, and I would love for you to check them out.  http://www.dyslexiamaterials.com/reading-language-arts-1.html

A New TED Ed Video on Dyslexia

I wanted to begin this blog by sharing a link to a video I found on Ted Ed entitled: What is Dyslexia? It's quite general and doesn't go into the different types of dyslexia, but I like the presentation and it is a nice overview.  http://ed.ted.com/lessons/what-is-dyslexia-kelli-sandman-hurley
